I worked at "Cumberland News" in Carlisle for five days.
It was really interesting to see how a newspaper agency is working. I was allowed to write own articles and take photos with the photographer.
If you are interested in writing The Cumberland News is a great working place. I talked a lot with the journalists and learned many new things.
But I also had some times where I hadn´t much to do, so you should bring your vocab book, or something useful to do.
Everyone was really friendly and helped me when I had a question. I was allowed to see different parts of the complex, so I visited the print office, and spoke with the website designer.
I would chose this working place again.

When I first entered the lot of the "small" company Linton Tweeds, I was even a little bit more fascinated of Carlisle. Our B&B was just a 15-minutes walk away, but the environment was completly different.
Instead of apartment buildings lots of factories identify this part as the industrial area of Carlisle.
But because everybody is able to talk about the normal everyday life at their work places, I want to tell you something about the differences of a work placement abroad and the things I didn't expected.

Black Tea - "do you wanna have a cup of tea?", "do you take milk and sugar in your tea?", two questions and two right answers.
Tea is the british synonym of coffee in Germany, no matter if the last cup is still standing on the desk. I am sure everybody already heard about the "British tea habits", but you would be very suprised about the reaction if you tell somebody, that you don't want to have milk in your tea, because you maybe don't like it or, like me, find it disgusting.

Fabrics and working atmosphere - I don't know if you have ever been in a factory of fabrics and yarns before, but I can tell you that a company that produces for chanel and which has its own online store is really impressive.
The designers, the accounts departement or even the old women, who were still weaving with hand looms, everybody was open-minded, friendly and courteous.
Massive buildings, huge machines for weaving, drying or cutting and giant storerooms make me feel kind of small, nevertheless I learned a lot about the material of fabrics, also the different kinds of workers and that language shouldn't be a obstruction for communication.

Presents and hospitality - Gingerbread tastes like "Spekulatius" and "Zimtsterne" is the most beautiful German word I've ever heard.
Maybe you are not expecting a comment like this on your present for the company.
One week before the Carlisle trip started, nearly everybody became desperated: "What should I buy? I need something that won't get broken on the one hour flight!"
It's enough to dive a person mad!
Therefore I was so happy the moment I saw that the first package of cookies was already empty the third day.
Furthermore I brought some "Merci" at my last day to say thank you and I also wrote a short letter, so everybody could recognise that I enjoyed my stay, honestly, I was so lucky about the scarf, the fabrics and all the other things they gave me! I could have never imagine the hospitality in this country!

"Hello everybody how are you, how are you today?" - This is, what every morning at my workplace -the James Rennie School- started with. The James Rennie School is a School for disabled children from age 3 to 19.
My first day was already very interesting and I was impressed by the possibilities there are, to give those children a normal day, which combines education and a lot of fun. I was in a class of 9 year olds and I really enjoyed the time with the children. They were all very lovely! Everyday they wanted me to teach them some german words and I was integrated in their daily routines.
Sometimes it was also a little bit hard for me, because of their severe disabilities. For example have I never seen a children with an epileptic seizure before. But the way they handled it, was great, so I've learnd to deal with it.
In those five days, I had the oppurtunity to improve my english and I had such a wonderful time with all those friendly and loving students and teachers!

Hello everyone!

Marla and I (Merle) did our work experience at Kingmoor Nursery and Infant School. Even though we came too late the first morning because we didn't get the right bus stop we really enjoyed our week! We both were in two different classes in year 2, which was really great because we did not speak a lot of German and we knew the children very good at the end of the week. We really liked the school system because the children were very motivated. In the lessons we helped the children learning. We helped them for example in maths or phonics. I also teached my class some German. They were very curious! It was a great experience for us because we were able to improve our English skills, teach and kind of educate the children. We really liked that we were respected like the teachers were and we felt very welcome because of the lovely teacher and students!

So, it was a really great week for us!

Hello everybody!

We are the Q1 from the Goethe-Schule in Flensburg, Germany.
Carlisle is the twintown of Flensburg and that's why we went there for a workexperience.
We were 20 students and almost each of us was in a different workplace. For example different schools, a pharmacy, an architect, two tailors and many others. As you can see various opportunities! With us travelled two teachers.
After work we did things together like shopping, going out for dinner or to the cinema or we went laserquesting. On our last day we went to Edinbrugh - as usual!

We all really had a lot of fun and enjoyed our trip and the workexperiences. All of us would definitively do it again and we miss Carlisle and the lovely people already!!!

On Saturday, the day we were in Edinburgh, we had 6 hours free time. At first, Tina, Karen, Levke and I (Michaela) went to buy some food but soon Tina and I decided to part from Karen and Levke who were not motivated at all to do anything ;-)

So Tina and I went off to find the little mountain ´Arthur´s Seat´ on which we then climbed. And here are some impressions from the top.

Yes, we had a lot of fun!!! ;-)

To everyone who thinks about spending one week in Great Britain I totally recommend eating fish'n'chips in a typical pub.
Although I felt like the only one who really liked the meal (and I am NOT uncomplicated when it comes to food ;-)!) the evening was really beautiful and we enjoyed it a lot ☆

Nevertheless I can also recommend the frozen and/or finished products.
Overthere is a really huge choice of products for very little money Of course, pizza is always available in your homecountry. And you should better use the possibility to try some new food. This is all about making new experience. But  sometimes you feel more comfotable with an already known meal.

In this sense, ▶Enjoy the meal!◀
